4 Great Burger Spots in Tuscaloosa

Most college town food scenes include a few places to grab delicious burgers and Tuscaloosa is no different. Burgers are the perfect companion to football games, late-night study sessions, and all-around hardy appetites looking for a mouthwatering bite to eat. We’re sharing four of our favorite spots for well-topped patties in T-town.

Not only does this list contain some of the best burgers around, but most are near your home-away-from home at WestGate.

Rama Jama’s

1000 Paul W. Bryant Drive
Tuscaloosa, AL 35401

Rama Jama’s is the happening spot on fall football Saturdays. With a prime location right next to the U of A Stadium, this eatery has had lots of practice at making winning burgers. Names are catchy at Rama Jama’s where you’ll hear patrons ordering favorites like the Touchdown Burger served with a fried egg. If you are the “go big or go home” type, consider the National Champ Burger made with 18 ounces of beef, two slices of cheese and two strips of bacon.

Signature T-shirts are available and a bottle of their Rama Jama’s Hot Sauce to take home is a must. This restaurant offers dine-in and carry out service. Bonus points for being within walking distance to WestGate.

Buffalo Phil’s

1149 University Boulevard
Tuscaloosa, AL 35401

This restaurant known for wings also serves up some of the town’s best burgers! Popular choices include the Farmer Brown (Angus beef, slow-melted American cheese and hickory bacon), Denny’s Shroom and Swiss (self-explanatory), Derrick’s Smokehouse Burger (smoked cheddar, bacon, onion rings, and Honey BBQ Sauce,) and the Country Burger (battered and fried hamburger steak, bacon and cheddar). Can’t decide? You’re not alone!

Don’t forget to ask about daily drink specials at Buffalo Phil’s and check out their shirts and koozies. They are conveniently located on the strip, close to the stadium and to WestGate.

Avenue Pub

405 23rd Avenue
Tuscaloosa, AL 35401

Open since 2014, Avenue Pub wasted no time in creating a name for themselves. Their plan for this restaurant included creating original takes on pub classics along with serving craft beers and fresh cocktails. Why is the Bacon Burger so amazing? Every day they start with fresh ground beef and make the patties in-house before adding provolone and bacon. Take it up a notch by adding some mixed greens, house-made pickles, and mayo. Bam!

Avenue Pub is located in downtown Tuscaloosa and their burgers are best enjoyed on the patio with a friend and a favorite beverage.

Baumhower’s Victory Grille

4251 Courtney Drive (Tuscaloosa South)
Tuscaloosa, AL 35405

500 Harper Lee Drive (Tuscaloosa North)
Tuscaloosa, AL 35404

Baumhower’s Victory Grille is a Tuscaloosa crowd pleaser with a burger menu sporting almost as many burgers as the restaurant has televisions. The burgers are always fresh and all of them come with LTOP (shredded lettuce, tomatoes, red onion rings and pickle planks). One of the burgers that stands out on the menu is the Victory Burger which is double-stacked for a full pound of beef with applewood bacon, multiple varieties of cheese, LTOP and an onion bun. Another interesting choice is the Hangover Burger with half a pound of beef, a fried egg, avocado, American cheese, applewood bacon and an onion bun.

Baumhower’s is a dine-in sports bar setting, but online ordering is also available. With two locations to serve diners, you’ll find the same menu at both.

At the end of the day, you may have your fill of burgers, but the short walk or drive back to your WestGate condo will make things a little easier. And, if you don’t want to go out for burgers, you can prepare your own on your balcony’s gas grill.
